THE THERAPEUTIC EXPERIENCE

What can you expect
from therapy?

We’ll make an appointment and you’ll get some paperwork.

I keep intake appointments the same length as a standard appointment to be respectful of everyone’s time and to help us get in the swing of what therapy will be like; this makes it important that you do the paperwork beforehand so we can jump right in.

The paperwork isn’t super extensive, but it helps me understand some of what you’ll be interested in discussing and exploring in therapy.

We’ll have our intake appointment.

Intake appointments cover why you are seeking therapy, what some of your goals might be, and any hesitation around participating in therapy that you may have.

From here we can set up another appointment, perhaps finding a consistent time going forward.

We’ll do therapy.

We may predominantly talk, but if you find it helpful to communicate in other ways (through writing, art, Lego, whathaveyou) then those may be incorporated, too. It is difficult to generalize too much about what this might look like because it is so specific to the individual, but I can promise that you’ll be informed about where we’re headed and will be encouraged to offer feedback as we proceed so that we are certain to tackle what is most important to you.

We’ll part…at least for a while.

I do not think most people are served well by therapy that lasts forever. This can feel a bit aimless and can lead to over-reliance on the therapist to maintain positive life changes. In generally I see clients for 8-12 weeks, and then we take a break for around 8 weeks.

The whole point in parting is for you to observe how changes made in therapy show up in your life. What was challenging? What seemed a good idea in therapy, but then turned out to be different when applied? What completely fell off, but you want to find a way to incorporate into your life? What ended up working and being amazing? The answers to these questions helps us know where to go next.

My Therapeutic Philosophy

We are all part of interconnected systems, like families, workplaces, and schools. These systems shape us, for better and for worse. They also send us powerful messages about who we’re “supposed” to be, which can cause us to get stuck in a story we didn't author and don't know how to change. Therapy gives us space to critically examine the narratives that have come to shape our lives, and the ability to reauthor them moving forward. Understanding how we learned to behave gives us more power to decide how we behave now.

Our time together will take place in a curious and compassionate environment—one where you can feel comfortable, hopeful, and supportively challenged. Therapy with me is about developing agency and building on the strengths you already have to navigate your life with clarity.

Have more questions? Let’s talk.

On my scheduling page, you can set up a time to have a 15 minute introductory chat.

Back and forth messages via email can too easily turn into a digital therapy session, but not one where we’ve actually met and can do our best work.

Having a call followed by an intake session is the best way to know if we’ll be a good fit.
